Community broadband initiatives top 550 mark

11 May 2005

The community broadband industry in the UK has continued to go from strength to strength, according to a leading figure in the broadband industry.

Malcolm Corbett is the director at the Community Broadband Network (CBN) and recent research from his firm has revealed that local initiatives are currently being run in more than 550 towns and villages across Britain.

According to CBN, the growing number of high speed projects are operated by a mix of social enterprises, local businesses, voluntary groups and public sector organisations, almost all of which are using economical wireless technology to deliver their services.

"The vast majority of those engaged are passionate about ensuring affordable broadband reaches their whole community," Mr Corbett told eGov Monitor.

He added that the projects all share the same aim, to help more people get connected to the internet and develop local media services, and represent positive times ahead for an online nation.

The news is also representative of the continuing efforts by CBN and groups such as the Access to Broadband Campaign which are working to bring together community networks, establishing a new regional support network to national activities.
