The switching and comparison service uSwitch has commented on BT's announcement of increased broadband growth.
Chris Williams, telecoms product manager at uSwitch.com Communications, said that the results for BT were positive, both for the company and the rest of the industry.
He said: "The fact they've achieved 5 million wholesale connections one year ahead of target is great news for the industry and demonstrates the highly competitive nature of the market."
However, he said BT were still failing to up their market share in the broadband market, and was facing stiff competition.
Mr Williams said: "Despite BT hitting a milestone of 5 million wholesale broadband customers, they are still missing their publicly-stated retail target of 40 per cent market share, with two-thirds of their wholesale broadband customers with alternative providers, such as AOL, Tiscali and Wanadoo."
At the moment, BT holds a 35 per cent share of the DSL broadband market.
Mr Williams commented that for BT to start clawing back market share, it would need to "lead from the front through continually developing innovative new products in a continually changing marketplace".
He concluded: "There are currently some great deals on offer and consumers should shop around before signing a long-term contract."
