Canterbury Wi-Max broadband trial announced

23 May 2005

The roll out of a broadband Wi-Max trial in Canterbury has been announced by Telabria.

The trial will be followed by an official launch of a pre-Wi-Max commercial wireless network in a few weeks, and follows a successful pilot.

Jim Baker, chief executive of Telabria said: "We are going to be making announcements about commercial services during June."

"We hope to prove or disprove the smoke and mirrors that often go on around wireless services," added Mr Baker.

The coverage and pricing of Telabria's service has not yet been revealed, and Wi-Max certified equipment is not expected to be shipped over before the end of the year.

However, Mr Baker underlined the company's commitment to the technology and the region. He said: "we have committed to rolling out wireless broadband services, so we will commence with pre-WiMax equipment, and migrate when it's possible."
