New figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed that broadband markets are continuing to grow rapidly during 2004.
In the 30 countries encompassed by the OECD, including the UK, broadband subscriptions reached 118 million, an increase of 41 per cent. This equates to 34.1 million new subscriptions.
The OECD broadband penetration rate reached 10.2 per cent in 2004, up from 7.3 per cent the year before.
The UK ranked 14th in the list of nations regarding broadband take up, behind nations including Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, the US and France.
Britain's position was an improvement on its 2000 ranking of 22nd.
The most popular broadband technology in use was still, with 60 per cent of the market, followed by cable on 33 per cent and seven per cent for the likes of fibre optics, LAN, satellite and fixed wireless.
