Service comparison website uSwitch.com has warned consumers that price is not the only factor to consider when choosing the right broadband package.
Customers should also be careful to consider other factors such speed and monthly service restrictions, which could affect the satisfaction they get from the product.
While prices are dropping across the broadband market, as competition heats up, customers should consider what they intend to use their broadband connection for.
If they plan to download a lot of music or photos or video clips, they may need to choose a package with no month download restrictions, or one with a high allowance.
Jon Miller, director of uSwitch.com said: "Downloading music files, sending emails, sharing photographs are online activities that we tend to take for granted.
"And it's why factors such as speed and monthly service restrictions should be considered. It's important that people take time to work out exactly what they will be using their broadband connection for, so that they don't under or over-estimate their downloading activity."
Mr Miller also warned of penalties that can be incurred should the limit be exceeded, which can range from being charged, as one would be when they exceed their overdraft limit, to the suspension of the service.
He concluded: "For people who've been intending to get hooked up to broadband or compare their existing provider, but are overwhelmed by the number of suppliers and different package options currently on offer, the uSwitch.com broadband calculator is a simple way to identify the right deal for your individual needs at the right price."
