Broadband closes in on dial-up

21 June 2005

The number of broadband subscriptions in the UK is continuing to soar, and is close to providing 50 per cent of all the country's internet connections.

According to the latest update to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) survey of internet service providers (ISPs), the number of broadband connections rose by 81.1 per cent between April 2004 and April 2005.

Broadband made up 49.2 per cent of all subscriptions in April, a 2.3 per cent increase from a month earlier.

This is contrasted with the steady decline of dial-up connections, which dropped by 25.2 per cent over the last 12 months.

Broadband's increasing market share is indicative of the public's desire to have a faster, always on connection to the internet.
