The benefits of broadband is bringing to communications, commerce and entertainment on the internet has been revealed by a new report.

Broadband Demographics & Usage, carried out by eMarketer, shows that the always-on, high-speed internet connection offered by broadband is revolutionising the web.

In the US at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, broadband connections expanded beyond that of dial-up for the first time.

Ben Macklin, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the report, said: "The evidence has been anecdotal until now. But the data now unequivocally shows that broadband users don't just do incrementally more of what dial-up users do - rather, they integrate the internet into their daily lives.

"This changes how they communicate, socialise, shop and access entertainment."
