Blueyonder increases broadband speed

12 August 2005

Telewest's blueyonder service is to increase its broadband speed, the company announced yesterday.

The upgrade will be free for existing 512k and 1Mb customers, while the blueyonder broadband elite services will move up to 10Mb for only £35.

The 512k service will become 2Mb, or four times faster, as will the 1Mb service, which will be upgraded to 4Mb.

The blueyonder broadband elite service - at 2Mb and 4Mb - will be increased to up to 10Mb. The broadband elite-2Mb service will also benefit from an increase in upstream speed to up to 384k.

Customers on the current 4Mb service will benefit from the new £35 price from October.

Telewest will begin upgrading its customers on a region-by-region basis, from September, with completion for all customers scheduled for early next year.

The upgrades will happen automatically, customers will not have to do anything.

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer of Telewest Broadband, said: "What's more, our customers will be able to make full use of this extra bandwidth because we won't be introducing caps and all the new speeds will be available across the network. With blueyonder services you actually get what you pay for."

Blair Wadman, product manager for Broadband at uSwitch.com says, "Telewest's announcement is fantastic news for its customers who will now enjoy even faster speeds at no extra cost. What is particularly impressive is that the Telewest service remains unlimited, so there are no restrictions on how long you can stay online and download. This move, along with ntl's recent annoucement to increase its download speeds, will put further pressure on Telewest's competitors to increase download speeds to keep up."
