Broadband idlers to be disconnected

26 August 2005

Broadband users who leave their computer on for long periods without using it could soon find themselves disconnected.

Customers of internet service provider (ISP) PlusNet have been notified of a change to their service, by which broadband will be cut off after periods of 30 minutes or more without activity.

The changes apply to users of PlusNet's Broadband Plus and Home Surf services but not to its Broadband Premier tariff.

In its email to customers, PlusNet said that the "idle time outs" were necessary for efficiency measures, and to allow internet protocol addresses to be recycled.

Customers affected by the news will be notified by September 2nd and will have until September 16th to terminate their contract and switch provider for free.

Industry analysts believe that other ISPs will follow PlusNet's move and begin to restrict services because of the over-demand for broadband.
