The BBC is to give people with broadband internet connection the chance to watch programmes online as they are broadcast.
Jana Bennett, the corporation's director of television, has revealed in an interview with the Guardian that by the end of next year either BBC1 or BBC2 will be simulcast online.
She said: "It's a great way of getting public service content, which people have already paid for, out to people in a different way."
Besides showing programmes while they are being broadcast the BBC is to continue to preview BBC4 comedy programmes on its website following the success of the cult comedy the Mighty Boosh, which attracted 35,000 viewers online.
The Johnny Vegas sit-com Ideal, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and a new sketch show Titty Titty Bang Bang, will all be shown in full first on the corporation's website.
Another use of technology to deliver programmes has also been announced recently with episodes of the classic science fiction shows Doctor Who and Red Dwarf being made available on mobile phones.
