More British homes are using broadband than American ones, new research has said.
Research from Point Topic and the DSL Forum says that for every 100 Britons there are 14 broadband connections, as opposed to 13 in the US.
Worldwide, broadband is growing exponentially. In the first six months of 2005, 24.5 million homes and businesses around the world moved to broadband.
Europe as is doing particularly well. With 47.5 million subscribers, the EU is now the world's number one region for broadband, taking over from North America.
Between January and June 2005, more than eight million signed up to broadband services in the European Union.
Blair Wadman, of uSwitch, which compares prices of internet and telecoms products, told the Times: "Our perceptions of the US are of it being ahead of us in many technological developments including broadband.
"But in the UK the availability of broadband has increased substantially so that everyone can have it if they want it and, in recent years, the increased number of suppliers has driven down prices."
