Broadband connections in the UK continue to steadily increase in number, new figures have confirmed.
The latest monthly update by National Statistics to its survey of internet service providers (ISPs) shows in its index of connections that by August of this year 55.7 per cent of internet connections were by broadband – an increase of 4.7 per cent over 12 months.
In the same year-long period, active subscriptions to the internet increased by 4.7 per cent. Dial-up connections – which held the majority of all internet accesses until April – have fallen to 44.3 per cent, with a 28.4 per cent decrease in usage over the previous year.
The report stated: "The market share of broadband connections has been increasing since the index began (in January 2001), reflecting its growing popularity and availability."
It also looked at uptake levels of the various kinds of subscription on offer, showing that broadband subscriptions rose by 21 per cent over the previous year, and that active subscriptions using free or billed dial-up access were down by 12 per cent.
