Broadband films will make big business

21 October 2005

The market for downloading movies via broadband is expected to explode in the UK over the next few years, research suggests.

Screen Digest predicts that by 2010 every British home will have legitimately received at least one film via this method – potentially generating more than £60 million for the industries involved between now and 2010.

Europe as a whole will see around €250 million generated by this development, as the increasing public feel for the Internet – coupled with the web's determination to embrace all forms of media – makes such actions commonplace.

Analyst Arash Amel said: "Although there are still issues in terms of bandwidth, download times and general consumer familiarity with the Internet as a means of consuming movies, these issues are becoming less significant.

"The market will be driven by the emergence of competing service providers....as well as the eventual appearance of download-to-own and download-to-burn strategies from content owners."

Increasingly, television and cinematic broadcasts are being made available for viewing over broadband at any time chosen by the viewer. In this country, the BBC's new Creative Archive will allow broadband users to view a wide range of material – including programmes broadcast over the previous week – whenever they wish to.

Don't pay more than you need on everyday things. Switching utility and financial suppliers is easy and saves you money.
