Wanadoo has launched its new 8Mbps broadband service in Leeds, having unbundled 16 telephone exchanges.
More locations are said to be imminent, as the firm adds its weight to a rush of organisations looking to install their own equipment in BT's exchanges through LLU (local loop unbundling) methods.
The service provided by Wanadoo will be four times faster than that offered by BT, which the company will still continue to sell. It plans to unbundle a further 150 exchanges in UK towns and cities in the foreseeable future.
A company spokesman told ZDNet: "This marks the transition from Wanadoo from being a virtual ISP to becoming a network operator with its own national network infrastructure and systems."
Competition in the market is hotting up. Carphone Warehouse has confirmed plans to spend £15 million on an unbundled network of its own, while AOL has placed orders to unbundled several exchanges and is running a London trial of a similar service.
