BBC Two set for broadband bow

BBC Two has ambitions to become the first mainstream television channel to appear on broadband, according to its controller.

Speaking at an industry conference, Roly Keating outlined his vision for the channel - a picture which features simulcast viewing, whereby programmes are available on the web at the same time as they go out on television.

Trials, in which viewers will be able to view either BBC One or BBC Two by simulcast, are in the offing for the new year.

Mr Keating said: "A broadband channel could of course offer simulcast programming and the kind of comprehensive catch-up currently being piloted in the BBC Player tests.

"But there's more to it than that, and you'll see our first steps on this journey next year. Whatever the broadband revolution means for audiences and channels in the future, we intend to be there, in the front line."

BBC Two is set to break more new ground when it becomes the first of the five main channels to become digital-only after the analogue switch-off.
