The number of homes having broadband installed has increased, with the technology's market penetration rising from 53.7 per cent in September to 58.9 per cent in December, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
In real terms, the figures show an increase of 250,000 new users.
Dial-up connections have continued to decline in the meantime, now accounting for just 41.1 per cent of all internet connections.
Broadband's prolific spread has helped the development of products such as the iPod, the Xbox and video-on-demand.
The ONS' figures reveal a year-on-year growth of 5.6 per cent in total internet connections and a 60.1 per cent increase in broadband connections since October 2004.
