High-speed 3G broadband trialled in UK

13 March 2006

The phone company Vodafone UK has announced that it is to begin a trial of its high-speed 3G wireless broadband technology.

Consumer trials of Vodafone's High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network will be launched as a result of a successful testing programme in Newbury.

The customer trial will begin in early April, before the product is officially launched midway through the year.

HSDPA connections will offer users faster mobile broadband access, with download speeds of around four times faster than current 3G speeds.

Tim Miles, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said: "The start of our high speed 3G broadband trial marks our relentless commitment to offering the best possible experience to our customers.

"We have seen high demand for 3G since its launch two years ago and our customers are hungry for the improvements that HSDPA will deliver. These important trials are part of a continuing drive to lead the UK through superior network performance and a customer experience that is second to none."

All of the UK's major cities would be able to take advantage of high-speed 3G broadband by the end of the year, the company said.

Several laptop producers now allow users to access the internet via a 3G connection, using the same type of SIM card used in mobile phones.
