BT has launched an ultra-fast consumer broadband service today.
The new service is capable of delivering customers download speeds of up to 8Mb and upload speeds of up to 448Kb.
The company said that the service was up to four times faster than its current broadband speeds and is now available to new customers taking its Option 4 broadband package.
Customers subscribing to BT's Option 3 package will be offered the new speeds from April 11th, with those taking out the Option 1 or 2 packages having to wait until later this spring.
Ian Livingston, chief executive of BT Retail, said: "We are offering something for everyone, be they new or existing BT customers, or people looking to switch to BT.
"BT's new, nationwide broadband service delivers the complete package - speeds of up to 8Mb matched by our best ever security features - and is set to take the broadband experience to a whole new level for millions of people."
He added: "With speeds of up to 8Mb, the entire family can now enjoy watching movies, making calls over the internet, online gaming, downloading music and faster web surfing - all at the same time and for no extra cost."
Existing customers are being offered a free upgrade to the new speed on a first-come, first-served basis.
