Glasgow tops broadband speed chart

25 April 2006

Glasgow has topped a list of UK cities in terms of broadband speed, according to analysis by a European company.

Dutch firm iPing said that the Scottish city was delivering users 2,395Kbps, while Londoners were receiving under 2,000Kbps.

Bristol and Leeds were found to have doubled their available bandwidth per user, increasing their position on the chart from 9th and 10th during the last quarter of 2005, to fifth and sixth during the first quarter of this year.

Liverpool and Edinburgh also saw good growth, increasing available bandwidth by over half.

Rene Post, chief executive of iPing Research, said: "Although speed of broadband connections is on the rise in Europe, some cities are clearly benefiting more from this development than others.

"On the whole we see that subscribers in smaller cities benefit more from the new technology than the larger conglomerations."

The chart was compiled by using the firm's Nuria technology, which allows users to measure the performance of their broadband connection.
