Microsoft launches VoIP service

11 May 2006

Microsoft has entered the internet telephony market with the launch of its Microsoft Live Messanger product.

A beta version of the product is now available to download. It is an updated version of the company's widely used instant messenger service, which has 230 million customers around the world.

The new program features voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology that allows people to call landlines and other computers.

Any consumer with a broadband connection will be able to make the most of the VoIP technology.

"Windows Live Messenger is changing the way people communicate and stay in touch," said Martin Taylor, corporate vice president of Windows Live and MSN at Microsoft.

"With powerful sharing, collaboration and communications tools designed to put the user firmly in control of their communications experience, Windows Live Messenger is a key part of the foundation of Windows Live.

"The several million consumers already in the managed beta have been giving us great feedback, and we're excited to make the beta of Windows Live Messenger to users worldwide."
