As many as one in five broadband subscribers in Europe and the US are now using wireless technology to share their connection between different computers and devices.
A survey of 2,000 internet users carried out by the research firm Strategy Analytics made the finding, which suggests that Wi-Fi hubs in the home a becoming par for the course for broadband users.
"Wi-Fi has become the preferred networking technology for affluent early adopters," said David Mercer, principal analyst at Strategy Analytics.
"Rising ownership of laptop PCs and other portable internet devices will make Wi-Fi the dominant home networking choice for most broadband subscribers."
The report found that 7% of households in the regions had a wireless network set up. The US had the highest penetration, with 8.4% of households having already opted for Wi-Fi.
The UK was found to have a Wi-Fi network operating in 6.1% of its households.
