Skype credit hits supermarket shelves

17 May 2006

The world's most popular internet telephony company Skype has announced that it is linking up with a UK supermarket.

The company, owned by online auction site eBay, has agreed a deal with Sainsbury's that will see the store sell Skype credit across 500 of its outlets.

The credit, or eVouchers, can then be used to call landlines and mobiles from a Skype connection.

Sainsbury's will also shortly be selling Skype headsets and handsets.

"We are delighted to be the first retailer in Europe to sell Skype eVouchers in our stores," said Adam Zeiderman, commercial manager of Sainsbury's home services.

"We think our customers will welcome the convenience of being able to purchase inexpensive worldwide internet calls when they shop."

Alistair Shrimpton, market development manager for Skype in the UK, added: "You can buy Skype credit as easily as you buy sandwiches or cereal. Our relationship with Sainsbury's means more and more people can enjoy using the internet to call family and friends all over the world.

"Buying Skype credit with cash while doing your regular shopping makes the whole Skype experience even more accessible to existing Skype users and new ones."
