Dundee goes wireless

22 May 2006

Dundee is leading the way in Scotland when it comes to the development of Wi-Fi broadband, as the city's university is to go wireless.

The University of Abertay will be used as the testing ground of new technology designed to give consumers with wireless internet access information about the specific location they are in.

Students will be involved in designing the user interface, as well as helping produce games that can be played across the network.

"Through this project, we are aiming to take the best elements of both local and online communities, giving local residents access to online information which is both relevant and of interest to them," said Lachlan MacKinnon, professor of information and knowledge engineering at Abertay.

The project is being conducted in partnership with Last Mile Communications, a UK wireless technology company.

Its chief executive Antony Abell said: "Personalised and local information is the most popular content on the internet today, as users try to sieve through the plethora of websites to find the answers to what they want to know."

The initial trial is expected to last for six months.
