Ofcom proposals offer new possibilities for wireless broadband

24 May 2006

New opportunities for fixed wireless broadband services have emerged, after new licensing proposals from the broadband industry regulator.

Ofcom is aiming to open up new frequency bands for commercial use.

It has suggested that the 71-76GHz and 81-86GHz bands be made available for licensed use as new broadband technology has been created that may be able to take advantage of the higher spectrum bands.

"These applications could include very high capacity, point to point wireless networks, which could potentially be used as alternatives to fibre optic cable," the regulator said in a statement.

"Possible data speeds range from 1Gb per second to 10Gb per second over distances of 1-2 km."

In comparison, the copper loops currently used typically only enable connection speeds of up to 24Mb.

Ofcom said it proposed to make the new bands available on a first come first serve basis.

It will run a consultation on its proposals until August 2nd.
