A report has emerged that suggests Milton Keynes' city centre could become the first in the UK to go wireless.
Silicon.com has reported that the city would have a Wi-Fi internet network installed this summer.
According to the website, the project will cover the area between Midsummer Place and Milton Keynes Central Station and could launch as soon as August 1st. It said that operators were even planning to expand the network to cover the entire city centre by the end of 2006.
Wireless technology will be installed on street fittings such as lamp posts in order to enable a city-wide connection.
Grant Seeley, Milton Keynes Partnerships' director of investment, said that planners had been working on the network for over a year and that the system would make Milton Keynes' city centre "the largest continuous area" to offer Wi-Fi anywhere in the UK.
Other cities are also planning to launch town centre networks.
Networks are set to be installed in several major British cities including Birmingham and Manchester by wireless operator the Cloud.
