Channel 4 to show online simulcast

26 June 2006

Channel 4 has announced that it is to broadcast some of its shows over the internet.

The channel said that it would broadcast shows online at the same time as they are showed on its regular output.

Live shows will be streamed on its website from June 27th and can be viewed by anyone with a broadband connection.

Imported programmes will not be included in its broadcasts however, ruling out the possibility that its US hits such as Desperate Housewives and Lost will be part of the simulcast project.

The plans were announced by chief executive Andy Duncan during a lecture delivered in London last week.

"I don't see the digital revolution as an attack on Channel 4's power as a public broadcaster," he said.

"I see it as a fantastic opportunity to build on what Channel 4 has always done -stimulate, infuriate, debate, create.

"The difference is we're doing it in many more ways than just via broadcast these days, because we have to engage with the public wherever they are."
