Global broadband population tops 150m

27 June 2006

The world's DSL broadband population has swelled to over 150 million subscribers, according to research.

DSL Forum found that the number of subscribers with a digital subscriber line (DSL) had increased 39% over the last 12 months.

It said that new applications such as online multimedia and video broadcasts were pushing up demand.

The UK was found to have the sixth most DSL subscribers, with just under eight million using this type of line for their broadband access.

The UK is also in the top ten for broadband penetration, with DSL penetration reaching 22.5%.

"DSL continues to grow with the subscriber demand for broadband residential and business services," said Michael Brusca, chairman and president of DSL Forum.

"This is driven by the global demand for multiple applications – including new video and voice services.

"This amazing sustained growth of DSL around the world reflects how broadband DSL is becoming essential to the average family, student and business," he added.
