Another free broadband offer to be launched

18 July 2006

Another broadband provider is to give its customers a free broadband connection.

Sky is to hand its satellite TV customers a free connection.

It will launch a bundle package with its home phone package that will see customers handed a 2Mb broadband connection with a 2GB monthly usage download limit, when they purchase the £14 monthly calls and line rental package.

"Sky Broadband is a compelling product which rewards our eight million customers with a quality service offering flexibility and great value," said James Murdoch, the company's chief executive.

"Sky is ideally equipped to enter the large and growing markets of broadband and telephony and by pushing the boundaries of the home entertainment market, we will help our customers realise the full potential from technological convergence."

He said that the move would be "earnings enhancing from 2010 and with the benefits of scale, deliver increasingly attractive returns thereafter".

Benefits would also be evident to customers, as the deal would offer "substantial savings and compelling value to customers".

A move into the free broadband market has been widely anticipated since Sky bought the internet service provider Easynet.
