24 August 2006

Just under three-quarters of all internet connections are now through broadband, according to new research.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have showed that in June 2006 broadband connections made up 72.6% of internet connections, which is up from 54.4% in June 2005 and 18% in June 2003.

The number of households in Britain with broadband access has risen by 0.6 million from 2005 to 2006 meaning that 13.9 million households are now connected, which is 57% of all UK households.

There was also a regional study of broadband take-up in the UK with the highest figures in London at 49% and the lowest in Northern Ireland at 28%.

Job hunting seemed to be a large factor in increased internet usage with 60% of adults accessing the internet in the three months before they were interviewed.

And there was an apparent gender in those people who had never used the internet with 30% of men admitting to being a technophobe compared to 40% of women.
