Internet technology expert NETGEAR has launched the SPH200D, a dual-mode Skype phone which, unlike many competitors' models, is entirely cordless.
This means that consumers are no longer forced to sit in front of their PC when they want to make a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) call and instead, can call other Skype users without charge while roaming freely about their house.
"Skype users have been traditionally tethered via a headset to the computer in order to place and receive calls from their Skype friends, so if they're not in front of the computer when a friend wants to talk, they miss the call," commented David Henry, NETGEAR'S director of product marketing within consumer products.
"For people who have friends or family overseas, Skype is a cost-effective way to maintain voice communications. The SPH200D simultaneously supports both traditional telephony services and Skype internet calling, eliminating the chance that a user will miss either Skype or traditional phone calls.
"In addition, we've incorporated Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications technology into the cordless phone to improve the range and enhance the audio quality," added Mr Henry.
The cordless phone also boasts a built-in speaker-phone and a high-quality colour display screen so that users can see who's calling them or, alternatively, who is available to call online.
