Carphone Warehouse announces 540,000th broadband customer

12 January 2007

Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced that it now has 540,000 broadband customers, 132,000 of whom were on local loop unbundled lines.

Finance director at Carphone Warehouse Roger Taylor told Reuters that figures were lower than experts had predicted, but the firm was now focussing firmly on getting users onto its own unbundled lines and expected to have 700,000 subscribers up and running by March.

Chief executive Charles Dunson added that a recent deal with AOL has made Carphone Warehouse a "clear number three player" within the UK's broadband market.

In addition, the company announced that it was to launch a fresh push for more broadband business after claiming a "significant" improvement in the way it deals with customers.

Its Talk Talk broadband service had attracted criticism from telecommunication experts after the unexpected high levels of demand revealed that its customer service sector was lacking.

In a trading update Carphone Warehouse stated: "We have now significantly improved our provisioning and customer service processes and are ready to increase the rate of recruitment once more."

Mr Dunson added: "Most notably, we now have no queues for connection and easy access to our call centres with little waiting to be answered."
