Over five weeks of the average broadband user's year is spent online thanks to the improved accessibility and easy-to-use technology of high-speed internet.
But according to the price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com, consumers are costing themselves £13 million each year by simply renewing their existing contract at the end of its term, instead of shopping around for the best deal.
Research from uSwitch.com has revealed that despite the fact that Britain has one of the most competitive markets in Europe, nearly ten million broadband users are overpaying for their service and collectively wasting up to £621 million a year.
In addition 73% of the 13 million broadband users have not switched their supplier, even when their contract has come to an end.
Steve Weller, Head of Communications Services at uSwitch.com, said: "We are dismayed at the amount that people are overpaying for this privilege though, especially since the average price of broadband has halved over the last five years.
"Ntl, for example, was charging nearly £35 for a 1Mb service back in 2002, but is now offering up to 2Mb broadband for £17.99.
Mr Weller continued, saying that while it was great that consumers were enjoying high-speed connections, now that the internet has truly become a way of life for millions, its up to subscribers to make sure that they are getting the best deal possible for this "lifestyle essential".
