Technology giant Philips has launched the VOIP841, a cordless Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (Dect) phone, which allows the user to make phone calls over the internet without going near a PC.
This voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone connects directly into the ethernet broadband modem, rather than into the computer, allowing the user to roam around the house while making cheap calls.
VoIP's popularity is beginning to spread throughout the UK's broadband users as consumers recognise the benefits of making calls across the web. Internet-based calls are cheaper, meaning that costs for phoning abroad or calling a mobile phone are considerably lower than with a standard landline tariff.
In addition to making and receiving landline calls via the handset or hands-free speakerphone, Philips' VOIP841 allows the user to make Skype-to-Skype calls and has the capability to store 500 numbers.
Other gadgetry gimmicks include 15 polyphonic ringtones which can be assigned to different address book contacts a full colour graphic display screen and a battery with up to 120 hours talktime.
