Broadband bringing families together

22 March 2007

Internet communication is being recognised as one of the best ways in which family members keep in touch, new research carried out by BT shows.

According to the group, almost half (45%) of parents in the UK use email as a primary means of communication, with over half saying that contact with loved ones is more immediate and frequent as a result.

Almost two thirds (63%) of parents said that having broadband access would make it far easier to bear if a family member was moving away from home.

Sue Caroll, Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor at 7 basic needs, said: "We've never seen a change in the family dynamic in quite the way we've seen with computers and the internet – particularly with the advent of broadband."

Emma Sanderson, Director of Value Added Services at BT Retail, said that the group was committed to providing "complete products and technology" which could enhance what people do with technology.

The BT Digital Living Report also shows that broadband has been beneficial to homes in many other ways, including making it easier to gather information.
