The latest figures from the telecommunications regulator Ofcom have revealed that over half of Britons are now using broadband - up from the 39% registered a year ago.
In addition, more internet users are logging onto broadband connections first, rather than trying dial-up and upgrading. Of the 23% of people with no internet at home 76% said that they were likely to connect with broadband during the next twelve months.
Ofcom's report also showed that the number of people logging on combined with the large number of internet service providers on the market meant that the cost of broadband was cheaper than ever before.
Speeds of up to 2Mbs were available for £15 a month last year, down from £50 in 2003 and bundling has seen a surge as well, with over 40% of all adults with broadband at home took broadband alongside other communications services from the same provider by the end of 2006.
Other points of interest arising from the document included the fact that over half of respondents have accessed online video or audio content, with 29% listening to or downloading online audio and 26% watching video clips online on a weekly basis.
Ofcom Chief Executive Ed Richards said: "With over half of UK adults now using broadband at home, we have reached a very significant milestone in the development of broadband Britain. Consumers are responding positively to the competition and innovation that the UK market now offers."
