ITV unveils just-for-broadband TV

2 May 2007

The future of internet protocol TV's (IPTV's) popularity took a step further forward today with the news that ITV is commissioning an exclusive made-for-broadband daily show.

Classic game shows like Blockbuster, Catchphrase, Countdown and Family Fortunes are all due to be shown on this exclusive channel, designed as part of the launch of its new broadband service.

Catch-up sessions of selected programmes will also be made available, meaning that consumers can watch many of the last 30 days' worth of programming by picking and choosing which content they want.

Sports fans are likely to enjoy the live Champions League, Uefa Cup, Rugby World Cup and Tour De France coverage and highlights offered as part of the sports section and wannabe TV stars will be pleased by the fact that ITV claims to be extremely proactive in terms of user generated content.

Speaking yesterday about the imminent launch, ITV Executive Chairman Michael Grade said: "Today we are combining the best of TV with the best of the web to create a service unrivalled by any other commercial broadcaster, anywhere in the world.

"Some are already streaming their channels, some are providing catch-up and some building their archive, but ITV.com will provide all three."

The move is expected to pile pressure onto the BBC who recently gave its equivalent - the BBC iPlayer - the go-ahead, though a launch date has not yet been announced. Channel 4 meanwhile, have reported pleasing results for their 4oD take-up.
