The Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA) has backed a campaign to see the end of broadband suppliers using the term "unlimited" unfairly.
Supported by over 8,500 signatures in a public online petition, the campaign, which is spearheaded by price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com, aims to force suppliers to label their broadband packages according to their restrictions.
Thanks to the enormous public backing of the cause, the ISPA has taken notice and issued a statement in which it declares that its members should: "incorporate any bandwidth caps, allowances or acceptable and fair use policies in their general sales and marketing literature, and on their websites."
"Information should also be given to the customer at the point of registration for a service," it adds.
Steve Weller, Head of Communication Services at uSwitch.com, was thrilled that the ISPA had become involved. He said that it was "a total scam" to allow providers of broadband to use words like "unlimited" when they in fact used capped restrictions on their tariffs.
The changes have started already, with Toucan removing all references to "unlimited" from its literature and website. "Hopefully, the ISPA's actions will encourage more providers to follow suit," said Mr Weller.
