British Sign Language (BSL) users are to have their own internet television programmes, following an announcement from VeeSee TV that it is launching its own internet protocol television (IPTV) channel.
The web-based content was conceived by well-known BSL interpreter Susie Grant and it will be the first dedicated channel for BSL. Broadband users will also be able to make use of an interactive forum and a user-generated content section.
Ms Grant told the BBC: "My original motivation for creating VeeSee was seeing so many talented and gifted deaf people encounter barriers in showing what they were capable of.
"These barriers exist purely because of communication issues - I also got frustrated waiting for the mainstream channels to cater for deaf audiences at reasonable times in their scheduling."
VeeSee will be shown alongside around 900 other channels by IPTV portal ViewTV. The portal's Director, Jamie Bronson, commented: "VeeSee is another example of how IPTV can cater for a market that traditional cable and satellite broadcasters have been unable to accommodate effectively."
