Access to broadband almost 100%

16 May 2007

Nearly 100% of Britons now enjoy access to broadband services according to figures from trade and industry minister Margaret Hodge.

The information came about through a House of Commons questioning session on May 14th, where Ms Hodge revealed that the targets set by the Telecommunications Adjudicator - 98% access by 2006 - were exceeded by the end of 2005.

Figures from the government showed that in the past seven years, the potential access for broadband services had risen from 30% of the population in 2000 to 99.8% last year.

Additional charts from the Telecommunication Adjudicator's office revealed that the number of complaints from customers trying to leave their original broadband supplier and switch to a better deal had also fallen, indicating that after pressure from consumer watchdogs and Ofcom, providers were finally beginning to make migration easier for consumers.

Having peaked at over 100 out of every 1,000 complaint calls being concerned with migration difficulties in January 2007, that figure dropped to under 80 out of every 1,000 by the end of April.
