Seeking to expand its telecommunications services, the Post Office has announced that it is to launch its own broadband service through a partnership with BT Wholesale.
Currently, the Post Office runs a popular home telephone service with over 400,000 customers, but its HomePhone service was hit with scandal last year when Ofcom investigated its sales and marketing practices.
Despite this, Alan Cook, the Post Office's Managing Director, is confident that the Post Office's broadband service would be attractive to new customers and said that he was "delighted" that the Post Office was about to join the broadband market.
He added that he was confident that the association with BT would help them to become one of the "leading players" in the area.
"The agreement provides the platform to enhance the Post Office's existing HomePhone service while offering customers some of the best deals in the market for both voice and internet broadband services," Mr Cook declared.
He also maintained that the Post Office's reputation for trust, its instantly recognisable brand and its nationwide branch network with 24 million customers a week would be "key assets" in its quest to win and retain broadband customers.
However, Mark Blowers, Senior Research Analyst at Butler Group, warned that the Post Office may find it too difficult to enter the broadband market, since it was already highly competitive and had a large number of established players.
"It is a very competitive market and the Post Office may have missed the boat by not getting into that market a couple of years ago," he told IT Week.
