Following the release of BT's first fiscal quarter results, the broadband industry is looking healthy throughout the UK.
In a surprising turnaround for BT, the first quarter results show that 175,000 new customers signed up to the provider's services in the three months up to June 2007, bringing the company's total number of broadband customers to a market-leading 3.8 million.
Virgin Media trails slightly behind BT with 3.4 million customers at the end of March 2007, and Carphone Warehouse fell back with 2.4 million customers, despite also picking up 126,000 customers in the same quarter as BT.
Ian Livingston, head of BT Retail, said that despite increased competition the company was seeing a definite exodus from cable providers, following the fallout between Sky and Virgin Media.
"One of the big changes from a number of years ago is we are seeing a far greater proportion of the UK [broadband] base going from cable to some sort of BT network," he said.
Over half of the country (11.2 million households) received broadband through a BT line as opposed to cable, ensuring a high profit margin for the company in their first quarter of 2007.
