Virgin Media forced to pull ads

2 August 2007

The ill-fated Virgin Media company has recently been forced to pull its adverts offering its broadband, television and home phone services.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ordered to cancellation of two adverts found in various newspapers advertising 30 triple-packages as "the real deal".

A decision to order the removal of the ads came after the ASA agreed that Virgin's services were unfairly comparing themselves to those offered by Sky.

Not only did Virgin not make it clear enough that the 30 monthly deal was only an opening offer which would eventually rise by nine pounds per month but the adverts also criticised Sky Broadband's speed restrictions, although Virgin also has speed restrictions and these were selectively omitted from the ad campaign, the ASA said according to a Times report.

Virgin Media went on sale last month after US buyout group Carlyle made an offer, and first round indicative offers are set to be heard soon.
