BT has become the first broadband provider in the UK to hit landmark customer levels, with four million broadband customers now signed up to its services.
The broadband provider surpassed Virgin Media earlier this year and its acquisition of Plusnet and Brightview further bolstered its customer numbers. Over the last five years, BT has added around 2,000 users per day to its broadband services, adding its last million customers in just ten months.
Ian Livingston, Head of BT Retail, said the figures were a "great achievement in such a short time".
"Broadband has proved to be one of the most popular new services ever seen… broadband can provide so many more services than just internet surfing, and it has become central to many people's lives and businesses," he added.
Compared to 2002 when the UK was behind other European countries in terms of broadband penetration, the UK is now only behind Canada in broadband penetration within the G8 countries.
