BSkyB is considering launching a standalone broadband internet package to add to its existing satellite TV and internet offering, it has been reported.Sky launched a bundled broadband package with its TV services last year and said in July it has signed 716,000 broadband customers since launch.
Any new standalone launch will provide further competition for internet service providers (ISPs) BT, Carphone Warehouse and Tiscali. Orange recently announced plans to launch a digital television service in the UK, while Tiscali also revealed plans to open up its internet television service to five million customers in the UK.
"We're now examining options to broaden access to the benefits and value that we can provide, however no plans are confirmed at this time," a spokesman from the firm told Reuters news agency.
"The most important issue will be pricing and the avoidance of any confusion between its pay and non-pay-TV broadband offerings," Sky said in a note to clients.
