London leads world in WiFi growth

London has topped a poll of cities in the use and adoption of WiFi worldwide.

The UK capital experienced a 124% increase in the use of the technology compared to the second half of 2006, the study by enterprise mobility services provider, iPass, found.

Europe has also led the growth in the take-up of wireless LAN technology and wireless hotspots in the world,

Overall, Europe has expanded its worldwide share of hotspot use to 36%, up from 31% in the second half of 2006.

Furthermore, the WiFi Hotspot Index showed that worldwide use of the technology had increased by 68 per cent between the second half of 2006 and the first six months of 2007.

Airports lead the way in the top locations for business people accessing hotspots, and in the UK Heathrow is top of the list, followed by Manchester, Edinburgh, Gatwick and Glasgow.

WiFi is increasingly being used by consumers in the UK as communications technology evolves, with the recently launched iPhone the latest device to offer users wireless capabilities.
