UK Broadband customers 'losing out'

2 October 2007

Broadband customers are paying almost £3 more for some of the slowest network speeds in the whole of Europe, a new study has claimed.

According to research by the Information Technology Innovation Foundation, broadband speeds in the UK are among the lowest in all of Europe, currently running at an average of just 2.6Mbps, slower than that received by consumers in Slovakia and Hungary.

What is more, UK households pay nearly £3 more for the service than people in Finland, who pay around £2.54 for an average speed of 21.7Mbps, compared to £5.50 in the UK.

Finland and Sweden ranked first and second out of the 23 countries surveyed, with 21.7Mbps and 18.2Mbps respectively.

The news comes as a recent report by Computeractive found that two thirds of broadband users in the UK are failing to receive the fast internet speeds they originally signed up for, with 62% of broadband users achieving less than 50% of the broadband speed they pay for.

Recently MP Stephen Timms warned that the UK could face falling behind the rest of Europe if it did not address the need for the installation of super-fast fibre-optic broadband networks.
