BT expands on ADSL2+ plans

16 October 2007

BT has confirmed its commitment to upping broadband speeds, by announcing the development of its new, souped-up copper wire network.

The ADSL2+ service, which offers a quicker version of existing phone-line technology, is now planned by BT to be made available to 5% of UK broadband subscribers by next April, Think Broadband reports.

By the following year, the internet service provider (ISP) aims to up this figure to 50%, it has said.

BT intends to trial the new technology at a Birmingham exchange from next month, with rival ISP Entanet also to be involved.

Speaking at the time of the trial's announcement, Entanet's Chief Operations Officer James Blessing commented: "This involvement will provide us first with hand experience of its implementation and testing as well as a significant insight into the network’s performance from an end user experience perspective and will help us accelerate our own product development."

Earlier this year, BT confirmed its position as the UK's most popular ISP when it announced that it had signed up its four millionth customer.
