Following its announcement earlier this month of a Wi-Fi hook-up with the McDonald's fast food chain, wireless internet specialists The Cloud have announced a new deal with the BBC.
In a joint venture, the broadcaster's website will now offer free access to its content through The Cloud's 7,500 wireless hotspots.
A portal to the free content will also be prominently displayed on the wireless firm's landing site - a move which would boost traffic to its site.
BBC spokesperson Ashley Highfield commented: "This venture enables us to offer free Wi-Fi access to BBC content on the high street, furthering the BBC's commitment to make its content as widely available as possible to our audiences wherever they are."
Group director at The Cloud Owen Geddes added: "Wi-Fi is emerging as the technology of choice for media and content owners wanting to extend their reach beyond traditional channels."
According to the most recent figures from Alexa.com, the BBC's website is the 33rd most popular in the world.
The Cloud holds the largest number of Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK, covering Heathrow and Gatwick airports, London's financial centres and the Coffee Republic chain as well as McDonald's.
