A new social networking service aimed at the over 50s has been launched this week, tapping into a new breed of so-called silver surfers.
It is hoped that Saga Zone will compete against other popular social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, with 13,000 users already signed up to the service in a trial in June.
According to recent figures from communications watchdog Ofcom, the popularity of the internet with the over 50s has soared in recent years, with nearly one third of over 65s spend time surfing the web.
Indeed a YouGov study commissioned by uSwitch, showed that the over-50s spend more time online than 18 to 29-year-olds, spending 15 hrs 34 minutes online.
Steve Weller, Head of Communications Services at uSwitch described the launch as "great news".
"Socialising is incredibly important to the older generation," he said.
"They usually have more time on their hands, especially once they retire, and may not be able to get out and about as much as they would like to. We are sure that they will grasp this opportunity to socialise in style from the comfort of their own homes."
However Mr Weller also went on to warn the over 50s to take care while surfing the net to ensure that they protect themselves from identity theft and phishing.
