BT slammed for customer service

5 November 2007

After announcing its success in attracting 1 million customers to its nascent broadband service, Sky Broadband chief James Murdoch has launched an attack on rival providers.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the Sky executive took a clear sideswipe at rivals BT, currently the UK's largest ISP.

"When we go out there and we say we're going to challenge some of those big incumbent telecoms companies who've been charging too much money for too little to too many customers for way too long, we think that's good for customers," he commented.

Mr Murdoch also offered his thoughts on the direction of broadband innovation in Britain - and poured cold water on speculation that his company would invest in ultra-fast broadband networks in the near future.

By contrast, local loop unbundling - the process by which rival ISPs such as Sky unhook their networks from the main lines at BT telephone exchanges to run their own copper-wire service - has "a huge amount of life left in it," he commented.

Launched last year, Sky Broadband is the UK's fastest growing provider - thanks in part to its being bundled with the broadcaster's more established satellite TV service.
